Reducing Printing Costs With Proper Imposition

One of the biggest issues we face daily with ownership of a web-to-print business is how to become more efficient. Needless to say we’re always looking for ways to save on material, cost of goods, and MOQ (minimum order quantity). Generally, people want the ability to order small amounts of custom printed products. Overall, the challenge is how to offer low minimum print quantities, reduce waste, and still maintain a healthy profit margin. FileSplice was born from these challenges.

Proper PDF Imposition Reduces Waste & Increases Profit

If you aren’t efficiently imposing and merging files you’re wasting material and money. Within FileSplice you have the ability to set page margins, spacing, and bleed by laying out files using imposition templates. The use of templates allows for maximum efficiency.

In addition, when imposing hundreds or even thousands of files at a time, it’s helpful to have a distinct file inserted between different designs to quickly identify breaks. Our system offers that option with what we call a “break label.” It’s inserted between each print file and is a low resolution copy of the design. This break file includes a thick red border and the order number/id number printed on it.

Having a break label makes identifying orders within a cut and stack print setting extremely easy. It saves the press operator time and increases turnaround speed. Subsequently this helps you reach a better SLA (service level agreement) for customers or vendors.

Not only that, quickly identifying orders within a stack allows you the flexibility to impose orders of all quantities together for a single print run and easily identify them at the end of production. For example, you may have an order for 1,000 labels and then an order for 1 and then 50, and so on. By imposing these together and having the ability to quickly identify them, you’ve solved the issue of producing small quantities in a cost-effective manner.

Web Based Imposition Software

The large companies that dominate the printing industry (not naming any names) are notorious for selling and/or licensing software that is restrictive or prohibitive on several levels. This includes:

  1. High upfront costs. Software packages for imposition can cost in the thousands, even tens of thousands simply because it’s branded with their name. That up front cost is generally just for startup then there are annual support contracts, upgrade costs and add on features.
  2. Workstation or location restricted. Restricting software to certain workstations or “seats” is common for for specialty software industry and gets costly extremely fast when you have a large workforce and or multiple production locations.

FileSplice eliminates both of the above issues. There is a small monthly fee for the account and then you pay as you go per job. No maintenance charges, annual contracts, costs for features, per workstation charges, or software charges. It’s PDF imposition in the cloud made simple. What’s even better is your ability to create your own custom templates and share them, along with your working balance, to any users within the system.

Ditch your expensive, clunky imposition software and move to FileSplice’s easy-to-use cloud based imposition software and start reducing your costs instantly.
